About The Role

We are looking for a prison education & skills trainer to join our team!

Reporting to the Head of Learning and Inclusion, you will be responsible for instructing and training prisoners who attend our purpose-built Cleaning Academy workshop in HMP Wealstun. You will be responsible for building effective, appropriate and supportive relationships delivering technical and employability skills, to support with the effective transition into SBFM employment upon release. In addition, you will play a major role in our inclusivity initiative, so will engage with our social referral partners (including other HMPs), and act as a support to candidates from various disadvantaged groups that we employ, identifying their next steps and potential progression opportunities with partners.  

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Deliver BICSc training to prisoners in the academy ensuring they successfully achieve the recognised licence to practice accreditation as a minimum. 
  • Induct prisoners to the workshop/area of work and train them in aspects such as Health and Safety, Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH), machinery and tools usage.
  • Provide support for prisoners where required; tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs.
  • Set learning aims and learning goals and provide updates against these to SBFM Learning team and the prison education and employment teams.
  • Maintain awarding body quality standards and contribute towards internal and external verification as required.
  • Set learning aims and learning goals, reviewing and providing feedback on prisoner progress.
  • Manage relationships with social referral partners to ensure candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds are being given opportunities.
  • Frequently organise check ins and support colleagues that are part of the inclusivity initiative. In part identifying appropriate development pathways and liaising with internal stakeholders to progress them onto relevant opportunities.
  • Deliver additional ad-hoc bespoke training courses in other subject areas, as required by the business.
  • Provide support and advice on career opportunities for area of work. 

 

Qualifications and Skills 

Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate is subject to security and identity checks prior to taking up post.

 
  • Teaching Qualification at Level 3 or above
  • Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Experience of supervising and maintaining discipline of prisoners or similar, receiving training, education or work experience.
  • You are a proven relationship builder who can engage and navigate people at all levels from all walks of life from prisoners to senior leadership.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Experience and confidence in teaching, motivating and inspiring groups of individuals
  • Ability to see the bigger picture of how people and culture fit into the company’s overall business strategy and goals
  • A team player with the ability to motivate others. 
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership.
  • A full, clean, driving licence and the willingness to travel in the UK to all client sites as required.   

Desirable:

  • Previously held a British Institute of Cleaning Science, BICS Assessor certification.
  • Previous experience of working in a HMP workshop delivery role.
